For nearly 30 years, the Center for Schools and Communities (CSC) has built capacity in professionals, strengthened organizational systems and transformed lives by reducing academic barriers that exist for students who are at-risk for educational failure. CSC is a recognized leader in education, providing professional development, research and evaluation, technical assistance and program management for educators, school districts and community-based organizations who work for or on behalf of children, youth and families.
Over the past decade, education reform efforts, provisions offered through the Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA) and a growing body of research in areas such as trauma-informed care and positive psychology have taken a foothold and changed the way educators view the role of the school and its importance of educating the whole child. No longer is the school day just about preparing for high stakes testing – social and emotional learning has moved to the forefront of the education landscape and educators have an increased awareness that when kids feel safe, have healthy connections with others and can understand and manage emotions, the stage is set, not only for an improvement in academics, but also for changes that impact lifelong success.
Recognizing these trends in education policy, practice and research, and the challenge of integrating SEL into educational settings, CSC intensified its focus on social and emotional learning (SEL) and launched the Center for the Promotion of Social and Emotional Learning (CPSEL). The Center for the Promotion of Social and Emotional Learning is a special initiative at Center for Schools and Communities that provides consulting, coaching and professional development related to SEL and character development to practitioners to help bridge the gap between research and practice.
